AMORE E SEGRETI - Madrigal art from Venice and secrets from the Japanese court

What makes something a secret? That not everyone knows about it? That you may not understand everything? The ZBO presents a mysterious program in consort formation from May to June 2026: a selection of Claudio Monteverdi's five-part madrigals and works by his contemporary Vittoria Raffaella Aleotti will be performed on string instruments. The audience will guess the text based on the harmonic tensions, the emotions, and the style of language on the instrument. Thematically, the program deals with (unrequited) love, games, secrets, and intrigues.

With a sharp and humorous tongue, the Japanese court lady Sei Shonagon describes the customs and events of the Japanese court in the 11th century in her “Pillow Book.” The texts are written in prose and have been newly translated by Michael Stein for Manesse Verlag. Japanologist and biwa player Silvain Guignard reads excerpts from them and plays “secret pieces” for solo biwa by Sei Shonagon.

An exotic and daring program with the ZBO Consort:

Monika Baer, Renate Steinmann, violin and conductor

Susanna Hefti, Stella Mahrenholz, viola

Kristina Chalmovska, cello

Silvain Guignard, recitation and biwa lute
